Highlighting 60+ Safer Beauty & Wellness Brands to Shop in 2025

  • Published: June 5, 2015
  • Updated: February 6, 2025

The beauty industry has historically overlooked and underserved Black women, despite our significant influence on beauty trends and substantial spending power. This resource aims to change that narrative by highlighting exceptional Black-owned brands that prioritize safe, sustainable ingredients.

When this directory first launched in 2015, it featured just 22 brands. Today, it showcases the remarkable growth of Black entrepreneurship in the safe beauty space, with each brand bringing unique perspectives and solutions to the market.

Why This Directory Matters

Black consumers often face dual challenges: finding products that work for our specific needs while avoiding harmful ingredients that appear disproportionately in products marketed to us. These brands offer thoughtful solutions, with many creating products that are:

  • Free from hormone-disrupting chemicals
  • Vegan and cruelty-free
  • Ethically-made with sustainable practices
  • Formulated with melanin-rich skin and textured hair in mind

Shopping these brands does more than fill your beauty cabinet – it supports:

  • Economic empowerment within the Black community

While I regularly review and update this directory, the beauty industry is dynamic. Ownership structures, product formulations, and brand positioning change rapidly. I encourage you to conduct your own research when making purchasing decisions.

  1. Good to see this list which I’ll be investigating. On the green beauty front I would love to see more inclusive-ness as it does still very much seem to be aimed at Gwyneth Paltrow! Other brands include Premae Skincare and for 5-free nail polish Dielle

    Hey Candace,

I love this master list! Just wanted to add that Ivy’s Tea Co is another excellent one to add the tea and wellness brands.
